Never, ever would I have seen myself giving a book written by Lucy Lennox a two-star review. This really pains me as she is one of my favorite authors and her Made Marian and Forever Wilde series remain in my queue to be read over and over. This series, Aster Valley, has so much potential and the first entry, though a too short novella and more of an introduction, was good. This second book was such a huge disappointment it almost felt like it was written by someone else. Both of the main characters, Tiller and Mikey, were, in my opinion, not very likable and not very good together. There was so much angst my head was spinning and Mikey's father (and Tiller's to a lesser extent) was a total nightmare, along with Mikey's whole family. What bothered me the most about Tiller and Mikey was the fact that they were almost 30-year-old adults and they still took orders from their fathers, lacking the courage to stand up for themselves or each other. The story was depressing and took too long for a resolution and even then was left unfinished with so much not revealed. The epilogue was about one of the characters in the next book and added nothing to Mikey and Tiller's story. Another small thing that annoyed me no end was that the author kept referring to Mikey and his father as Mikey V. and Coach V., as if the reader wouldn't know who they were without the reference to their last name. The first time in the book would have been plenty and then the V. should have been dropped. Drove me crazy. There is no doubt in my mind that Lucy Lennox is a terrific writer and I am a permanent fan and I fully intend to read the next book about Truman and Sam. I just hope there isn't so much angst and that it ends better than this one. I’m surprised Mikey was as likable at all. He was raised by monsters. His father was a cartoonish villain and his Mother was a shell of a woman.I’ll be honest I was hoping Coach would have got some comeuppance. Sadly, that did not happen.This book dragged for me me in spots and had a very abrupt ending. Maybe in book 2 we get more ends tied that were left loose.Tiller was likable enough but he was a bit one dimensional. Football for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Repeat. I wish there was more to it and him. I really wanted to like this one but it fell flat for me.
